football is beautiful: sophnet x bombonera dw-56rts-8jr

i’ve never heard of the dw-56rts-8jr until the middle of this year while browsing yahoo japan.

the elements of this watch that attracted me to this model is its association to football, a cool packaging and the various small design details.

this is essentially a collaboration model carrying the names of japanese fashion label sophnet and what i think is another fashion brand bombonera 12.

la bombonera is also a famous football (soccer for folks in north america…) stadium , home stadium of famous argentine football club boca juniors.

the watch is a referee timer that looks very much like the classic 5600 model, but with a completely new module with rather large digits. casio released quite a few referee timer models, including two special editions in 2006 to commemorate the football world cup in 2006.

the backlight of the dw-56rts-8jr sports a picture of a screaming man (that’s what i can make of it at least…) flanked by the words “you’ll never walk alone” and “ultra nippon”.

“only” 2006 copies of this watch were released and each was individually numbered on the caseback. this copy is 1292/2006

some shots of the packaging:

misc info:

according to virtualjapan.com:

Sophnet is a Japanese clothing brand designed and created by Hirofumi Kiyonaga. The brand is one of three brands operated and designed by Kiyonaga and represents a middle ground for the more casual FCRB and refined Uniform Experiment lines.

Sophnet was created as one of Kiyonaga’s earlier labels and has earned him the most acclaim as a result. The brand first launched in 1998, and has been a highly regarded fashion line in Japan ever since, bridging the seeming divide between the streetwear lines like A Bathing Ape and upper scale lines like Issey Miyake and the wide variety of clothing either offers.”

you’ll never walk alone

is also the name of a famous song which quite a number of football clubs around the world have adopted as their club anthem… liverpool football club, whom i am a lifelong fan of, is one of them.
